Hu Jintao Claims Election, but Hillary Vows to Fight on

Posted March 15th, 2008 by Josh

As reported by Xinhua, Hu Jintao has claimed victory in his re-elction today at the 11th National People’s Congress (NPC), appearing to have a clear majority. Senator Clinton told the media not to jump to any conclusions yet, citing an obscure Communist Party rule that allows for “the super army” to install anyone they want–her perhaps–as dictator. They are still counting votes, but it appears President Hu has won at least 94% of the vote, and possibly as high as all.

Senator Clinton pointed out that conventional rules would appear to give Mr. Hu the lead, but “I’m still finding my voice. I haven’t been able to find it yet because I’ve been busy claiming 35 years of my husband’s experience. Besides, we don’t put much value on the NPC.”

The New York Senator did seem to leave open the possibility of co-leadership with Mr. Hu, although experts seemed to think it was merely a ploy to court the president’s core supports. Political analysts have said that Senator Clinton has little base in China and would struggle to bring new people to the polls. Nonetheless, her answer to a question about a joint Hu-Clinton ticket prompted this response:

That may, you know, be where this is headed, but of course we have to decide who’s on the top of ticket

Experts are unsure what options Senator Clinton really has left in this race. The NPC, which holds its rubber-stamp election every five years, is the supreme decider of Chinese leadership. Nevertheless Senator Clinton said that she had a team of lawyers looking into all possible options to try to make sure that the will of the people would be heard. When journalists pointed out that the “P” in NPC stands for “people” Ms. Clinton responded “That’s one interpretation. Again. Teams of lawyers.”

For his part, Mr. Hu dismissed any notion that Senator Clinton could still defeat her saying, “We won 97% and she got zero votes.” Pressed further on how the election could be considered legitimate when only one name was on the ballot, the Chinese president said the country had moved to “Michigan-style democracy,” before adding, “She’s not even Chinese!”

When news of President Hu’s comment reached 1984 Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee Geraldine “at least we won Minnesota” Ferraro, the former congresswoman and fierce Clinton supporter said:

If [Hu] was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is.”

When journalists tried to get a response out of Mr. Hu, the president abruptly stopped the press conference saying, “I have to go remind an inseparable part of China that it has no legitimate claims to independence, and that it was ‘peacefully liberated’ from itself by the good folks of the PRC.”

With the fire power Hu shown the delegates in [western china], no one would ever dare to vote against the voting directions. Hu taught all the delegates a good lesson in how he got ahead by killing [western china people] while he was in charge in [western china].
