Your Favorite Podcasts

Posted December 2nd, 2007 by Josh

I guess the internets here are causing problems with Itunes or something, because there are a few podcasts that won’t download: Bill Simmons Report, Real Time, This American Life, and Face the Nation. So I’ve been looking for some more good ones, as the first three are probably among my five favorites. Can anyone out there recommend something?

The others that I listen to now are the Sunday morning shows (Stephanopoulos, Russert, Fox News, and Washington Week). Then I fill things out with some sports from a few of the WFAN hosts (NYC radio station) and then normal news: New Hour, NBC Nightly, ABC and BBC. The last two are kind of last resorts.

So, with some of the best podcasts not working now, I look to you, my semi-loyal readers, to give me some suggestions. A friend turned me on to This American Life, and now it’s a favorite, so you could be vying for the title of ‘a friend’ (not replacing the other one, just an addition).

Incidentally, if you’ve suddenly decided that Huckabee is the Republican savior, I’ll grant you he is quite appealing, even to non-Republicans. However you might want to take a look at his Face the Nation summer appearance before you get too excited (may have trouble opening this in China).

    The New Yorker has a campaign podcast, although it is only 8 minutes once a week, which isn’t very much listening:

    Josh:

    I apologize for that, but I could not find an e-mail address for you.

    I’m a American, but I have lived the life of an ex-pat in Shanghai and Tokyo.

    I want to invite you to view my site at the URL below. I’m trying to get more acquainted with the Asia Blog community, so if you like it let me know and we can exchange links. My blog is pretty new and focused on East Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa, but I hit a variety of topics that interest me.

    I used to listen to a lot of the NPR podcasts, but frankly, they weren’t great. Besides, it irritated me that All Things Considered is a paid podcast while HBO gives stuff out for free. A little counter-intuitive, no?

    I suggest you go a little north of the border and check out stuff from CBC Radio. I’m Canadian so I use this as a way to keep up with what’s going on at home and there are number of non-Canadian centric shows that will appeal to non-Canadians examples include:
    Ideas (Philosophy/history/social ideas)
    Spark (Technology)
    Search Engine (Internet culture)
    The Sunday Edition (current events)

    All of them are available at http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting

    Yeah PTI and The BS Report have gone downhill for me too. Could be an ESPN/ABC thing.

    Check out Rocketboom, a video Podcast to give you a little taste of life back in NYC/East Coast.

    Also, The Eocnomist can put out some great International perspectives.

    And Bill Maher, but he hasn’t put out anything in awhile.

    I listen also to KQED’s Forum which lets you download at leats 10 hour long episodes a week about different topics. Some you just don’t download, like local news in San Francisco… but others are quite interesting, especially when the host talk to authors.

    And one more thing (I am addicted to podcasts) NPR: All Songs Considered and their partner podcast, Live Concert Series. Introducse you to a whole new bunch of artists and full live concerts from the 9:30 club in Washington D.C.

    @John

    Canadians in communist countries always have an agenda ;-)

    I’ll check the CBC stuff out.

    @Rick

    I’ll look into that stuff, but All Songs Considered has always been a bit of a letdown.

    KQED is intriguing…
