What’s Up with the Chinese Internets?

Posted November 30th, 2007 by Josh

For the last six weeks the Chinese internets has been a bit spotty, at least everywhere I’ve used it. It seems like a lot of sites are getting the “BBC” treatment. This means you can connect to the front page, but none of the links actually work. I’ve been using the proxy server Anonymouse, which works pretty well for most sites, but not for the more complex ones. It helps me get all my subversive information on how the Mets are doing nothing this off-season. You know, top secret stuff.

Supposedly the government got cautious in the run up to the Party Congress, but that was in October, so, uh, can you open it back up some time before the next meeting? How else am I going to find out about hilarious exchanges between a left-wing Mormon turned right-Rudy's Comb Overwing extremist, and a cross-dressing megalomaniac who finally ditched his comb-over (a decade late)?

(If I can get off on a tangent here, how good is the Republican Party right now? Here are some real quotes from this week:

Rudy (to Mitt Romney): “You did have illegal immigrants working at your mansion, didn’t you?”

Mitt (end of his response): ” If you hear someone with a funny accent, you, as a homeowner, are supposed to go out there and say, ‘I want to see your papers.’”

This one I’ll just let you watch:

Anyway, let’s try to stay on track here.

I’ve heard rumors that someone I know might be seting up a special proxy for foreign mainland China residents so that they can set up their computers in a way that would always go around firewalls, but I’ve heard a lot of rumors in my day. Is there anyone who wouldn’t plop down 200 kuai a year for that??

So I guess my question is: Is it just my service, or is the internets messed up?

I have given up on all the proxy stuff. I found a good pay service (about fifty bucks a year, but you can buy thirty days at a time), that tunnels back to the mothership. I have had it since they screwed around last month and I got fed up with having to try a few different paths. With this one, I know it is secure (watched the packets), and they can’t detect nslookups, as it uses the dns server outside the harmonious society. I don’t want to publicize the service, although it can be found online. You can email me at the one I listed for this comment if you are interested.
